IPAF Training Course – Details

Anyone who operates a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) should take one of the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) courses which are available from BOSS Training. The courses are suitable for those wishing to brush up their safety knowledge as well as anyone who is new to working with this kind of equipment and individuals or groups from one workplace can apply. The courses carry the added advantage that on completion of the course and successful passing the assessment at the end, a five-year PAL (Powered Access Licence) card is awarded, which can be used across the UK as proof of competence in working on any Aerial Work Platform. As such, it is a really useful addition to the CV of any MEWP operator.

Training is provided on two machine categories – mobile scissor lift and mobile boom – but certain venues offer more. Please check for details. The IPAF categories are listed below and can be put together to form a package that will be specific to certain employment situations; again, check for details.

  • 3a (Mobile Scissor Lift)
  • 3b (Mobile Boom)
  • 1a (Static Vertical)
  • 1b (Static Boom/Van Mount)
  • PAV (Push Around Vertical) – this can be added as a familiarisation module at no extra cost.
  • MEWPS for Managers – this course is ideal for anyone who manages or supervises those using Powered Access Equipment. A five-year PAL Manager card is awarded at the end of the course.

Companies with their own machines on site can arrange to have the courses run in situ – this is a great way of ensuring that staff have all the applicable knowledge they need.

Health and safety – whenever using a boom type MEWP, IPAF recommend that a full body harness is worn; this includes both static and mobile booms. The situation is not quite so clear-cut with vertical scissor lifts, so the recommendation there is that there should be a complete risk assessment carried out before the work begins. These kinds of issues are addressed in training and everyone successfully completing the course will have the knowledge base to make these decisions and help make the workplace safer for everyone.

Course Agenda

The course will cover a number of elements which are essential for safe use of MEWP equipment and will be covered by using practical instruction as well as theoretical reinforcement.

  • Introduction – why IPAF Training is important
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – covers all the basic points
  • Work at Height Regulations – specific clauses which cover working at height
  • Understanding Safe systems of work – why it is needed and how to be safe
  • Understanding the capabilities of MEWPs – this can be tailored to specific models
  • Duties of the MEWP operator – with special reference to health and safety of the operator and colleagues on the ground
  • Emergency systems for lowering – essential as there is no room for doubt in an emergency
  • Hazards and Risks – full coverage of both expected and unexpected events
  • Checks and Inspections – essential for safe operation of all categories of MEWP
  • Controls – this can be tailored to specific models if available.
  • Storage – vital if a piece of equipment is used only rarely.
  • Written assessment test paper (multiple choice)
  • Practical session – operation of the work platforms
